Teacher Training
All selected candidates who are not trained in teaching pedagogy will have to undergo training at the National Institute of Education (NIE). NIE conducts 3 pre-service teacher training programmes.
Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Programme
Officers appointed to the General Education Officer 1 (GEO 1) scale will undergo the 1-year PGDE programme.
The 1-year training programme at NIE will cover:
- Education Studies (concepts and principles of education)
- Curriculum Studies (methods and techniques of teaching of assigned subjects)
- Subject Knowledge (subject content for Primary School teaching)
- Practicum
- Language enrichment and Academic Discourse Skills

Diploma in Education Programme (DipEd)
Officers appointed to the General Education Officer 2 (GEO 2) scale will undergo the 2-year DipEd programme. All PE teachers will undergo a 2-year training programme.
The 2-year training programme at NIE will cover:
- Education Studies (concepts and principles of education)
- Curriculum Studies (methods and techniques of teaching of assigned subjects)
- Subject Knowledge (subject content for Primary School teaching)
- Practicum
- Language enrichment and Academic Discourse Skills

Post Graduate Diploma in Education (Physical Education) and Diploma in Physical Education
NIE also conducts a 2-year training programme for teachers teaching Physical Education as 1 of their subjects.
The 2-year training programme at NIE will cover:
- Education Studies
- Curriculum Studies in Physical Education and Other Subjects
- Subject Knowledge in other subjects
- Practicum
- Language enrichment and Academic Discourse Skills

Bachelor of Arts (Education) / Bachelor of Science (Education)
NIE also conducts degree courses leading to the award of the Bachelor of Arts (Education) or Bachelor of Science (Education). These degree courses provide a rounded University education through rigorous exposure to 1 or 2 academic subjects and training in the skills needed to teach in Primary / Secondary Schools.
The BA (Education) / BSc (Education) course comprises 7 areas of study:

- Curriculum Content

- Practicum
- General Electives
